With Love! 🫶🏾 Shoutout to everyone who came through for Dyasphonic! It was so heartwarming to see new and familiar faces on the dancefloor for the party's comeback! I'm so excited to continue curating this party for those of us in love with the expansiveness of Blackness and our sounds. August was a complete whirlwind for me. I started the month healing from a dental surgery from HELL, had quite the complications after, then on to Indianapolis for Furahi Day, where I had the BEST time—Indy I WILL be back—to playing a private event for Chicago's newest cafe Cafe Jon & Galleria in Pilsen before Asake's first tour stop in Chicago to hosting the latest Dyasphonic 😪 I'm sweating just typing this right now! But these are the blessings I prayed for years ago as a baby DJ going live on Instagram and Twitch via Streamyard (IYKYK). This month is going to be just as fulfilling with another announcement I can't believe I'm even typing—I'm opening for JULS!?!?! For the past few years it's been a goal of mine to learn how to produce music. I've recently realized most people don't just hear sounds in their heads? For so long, before deejaying, I have and would just hum it out or write lyrics to help me remember the tunes. But this year I finally started seriously tapping back in to Ableton and have happily made approximately TWO beats that I am proud of (shoutout to my YouTube subbies who've heard one already). Before even becoming a DJ, I had a deep love for producers like Juls, Jarreau Vandal, P2J, Rvssian, TRVKGIRL, and more who are the brains behind so many of your favorite songs. Music composition and production are the start of the bangers that turn the club up and the roots of the love songs that help us all melt. Juls has been such a staple in contemporary African music. Whether you're a newer fan of African music or longtime lover, you have heard the tagline "It's Juls baby.." In the 2010s, I was a big fan of (and still am, he's releasing new music!!) of Mr. Eazi. The earliest song I can remember hearing Juls' tagline was in Mr. Eazi's "Skintight," a detty tune 'til this day! Juls' latest project JUNCTION is a collaboration with Jamaican artist Projexx, combining Caribbean riddims with Ghana's unique afro-forward sounds—an undeniable connection in every way. I'm so excited to honor my Jamaican heritage and the impact of Ghanian and Jamaican music worldwide! I'm on at 10PM this Friday! Join me and JAMA! for another night to remember!
Bye Bye Eden!When I see discourse online about people not dancing at parties, I shut up, because I truly party at the underground functions. My first Eden was back in 2022 and it was one of the most fun and liberating times I've had on the dancefloor! The following year I brought that freedom behind the decks at the California Clipper for Jenny Fox's Globethotter party and had the BEST time going B2B, for the first time ever, with Jenny Fox! I can't wait to join this group of phenomenal DJs and give Eden the best going away party! Ashawo: Naija Independence!Na Gay Dey reign! April's Ashawo was one of my favorite sets I've played this year so I cannot wait to be back for their Nigerian Independence Day party! Personal Space SessionHave you ever wanted to go to Pirate studios and practice deejaying on CDJs, and thought, "Oh, Chicago doesn't have one!" Well, Chicago now has a cool new alternative and I recorded a fun global mix there! I remember really wanting to learn CDJs in my early days and thankfully a fellow DJ I admire and love (shoutout MAMICANA) linked me with her then-manager who also managed a venue and allowed me to practice on their equipment. Access to CDJs is a true issue for up-and-coming DJs, so please check out Personal Space Studios in the West Loop if you're looking to practice, record a set, or book a lesson if you're starting from scratch.
