🌸 It's May Already? Here's Saturday's Soundscape! 🔊

When I first started DJing I had no idea how much joy it'd bring me and how helpful it'd be for me in expressing myself. The realest ish I ever heard was when Jay-Z rapped, "I can't see it coming down my eyes, so I gotta make the song cry,".. A WORD! But even more than that, the greatest gift of this creative career has been the community of women and femme sound selectas and event producers I've gained! It may shock you, but even in 2025, people are surprised to see me and other women DJs rocking dancefloors. But trust, the lack of women and femmes in this space IS intentional, but it WILL change.

Believe it or not, stagnancy thrives in the status quo. Even with the growing numbers of talented women and femmes deejaying in your city, you may not see them playing as often as their male counterparts. There are many reasons for this, but all in all, it has led us ladies in the city to stick together! But still, we need YOU to actually see change in events and nightlife!

When you support parties in Chicago that are committed to booking women & femmes, it sends a clear message that Chicago wants a level playing field for DJs of all backgrounds. Two of my favorite parties doing this work are Party Noire (SZN 10 coming May 26!) and Gyrate (my bday twin). The DJs we have for the second installment of dyaṣphönic.dance are uniquely talented and ready to expand your soundscape! TAP IN!

Dyaspara is a cultural connector who lives to learn and reflect on the beauty, vastness, and connectedness of cultures in the African diaspora. The open format DJ is known for her selections of afro-house, edits, afrobeats, dancehall, amapiano music and other global Black sounds. She's passionate about helping people of the African diaspora remember the rhythmic origins in their blood through movement.

Dance and Klub Kitty Queen Zuni will be on the decks for the next dyasphonic! Known for her unique blends of dance and juke, we can’t wait for Zuni to electrify the dancefloor with a global spin!

We have the phreakiestly talented DJ as a selecta, Phreaky Bionick! From Dancehall to House, Phreaky Bionick will expand your sonic appetite and keep your hips moving! #thefutureisphreaky and we’re just happy to be a part of it! Get ready!

We energized the Agave Den last month, but tomorrow we'll be lighting up the larger nightclub space so you'll have even more room to dance! If you missed the first one, don't fret: just make sure you reserve your free RSVP ticket in advance and bring a friend! We'll have Bayab Gin specials again (#MakeitAfrican) for the low and I'll be closing out the night! I hope you're ready for a great time

If your Threads feed looks anything like mine, you are hurriedly scrolling through several verbal boxing matches between mostly Nigerian artists & Afrobeats lovers and South African artists & Amapiano lovers. Before I jump into this topic, I encourage you to read my newsletters from two years ago, where I pondered what the future of Afrobeats and Amapiano would sound like, and how I don't love "afropiano". The "Best African Performance" category at The Grammys was announced in 2023, with...
